The North American Book of the Dead

Cleveland: 7 Flowers Press, 1966. First printing. 4to, unpag. mimeographed leaves stapled in card covers with a hand-painted wraparound panel. Spine chipped; some minor denting; very good. Item #207859

The best-known work of the Cleveland hippie-poet, greatly expanded from the earlier self-published work of the same title from 1965. A creative seeker and prolific self-publishers, Levy drew national attention when he was charged (along with the proprietor of Cleveland's Asphodel Book Shop) with distributing obscene materials to minors in the year of this publication. Although the case fizzled it took a toll and Levy died by suicide in 1968. His posthumous reputation as a bard of 1960s counterculture has grown considerably. A delicate and uncommon volume.

Price: $2,500.00
