Art of Tomorrow
New York: Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, 1939-1941. Three booklets, various sizes. Item #207845
Three illustrated exhibition pamphlets prepared by Hilla Rebay for "Art of Tomorrow" exhibitions that marked the beginnings of the Guggenheim Museum. The early exhibitions, dedicated to "non-objective painting," prominently featured the work of Rudolf Bauer. Now virtually forgotten, Bauer was a darling of the foundation in its early years. The relationship turned toxic after he realized he had signed away all of his work to the foundation. Out of spite, Bauer gave up making art and the Guggenheim simply put his work into storage and it remained little-seen for decades.
