Portrait of Marcel Duchamp; Real photo postcard

New York: Société Anonyme, n.d. (ca. 1920). Gelatin silver print on cardstock, 4-3/4 x 3-5/8 in. unprinted on reverse. Very good. Item #207837

Rare real photo postcard showing one of Katherine S. Dreier's painted abstractions, likely photographed by Man Ray. The card dates from the earliest period of Dreier's Société Anonyme when it was housed in two rooms at 19 E. 47th Street in New York. Dreier founded the Société Anonyme along with Duchamp and Man Ray with the aim of promoting modern art -- she added "Museum of Modern Art" to the name but that was ultimately usurped by the somewhat later institution founded in 1929 by the well-financed Alfred Barr. An indispensible advocate she has been sadly neglected as an artist in her own right, overshadowed by the male artists whose careers she helped advance.
