A half-length profile, with the sitter's garment spreading to fill the lower half of the image and blending into a foreground of flowering a bush. Signed "EGC 1901-1902" and inscribed on the reverse of the mount "For Nellie from Papa." Craig met the violinist Elena Meo in 1900 and formed a long-lasting romantic partnership with her. They had three children together, of whom Nellie was the second. This evocative portrait dates from the early period of their partnership.
