Duplicatum de Visa d'Exploitation; en France d'un Film Cinématographique . . .

Paris: Centre national de la Cinematographie, 1953. Single leaf, approx. 5-1/4 X 8 in., printed on one side only of green tinted cardstock. Edges toned; neat rubberstamps to front and rear. Item #206197

Blank form (no. 009,775) of the official visa allowing a film to be shown publicly in France. The system of such "visas d'exploitation" dates back the early decades of the century and served for many years as a kind of shadow censorship, since all films were required to have the visa in order be shown, without any need to formalize rules concerning content. Filmmakers tended to keep their work within broadly understood boundaries of public taste and sensibilities. In the postwar years, tastes became more liberal and the visa system loosened, although it never went away. This document bears the stamp of the CNC on the front; on the rear is the ownership stamp of the noted cinema collector Gérard Troussier.
