Heusinger had been Chief of General Staff in the German army under Hitler, and later Inspector General of the Bundeswehr in postwar Germany. He was in the room with Hitler when the bomb exploded in the 1944 assassination attempt by Claus von Stauffenberg. His appointment as head of the NATO Military Committee in Washington was controversial, but he served in the post until retiring in 1964.
