Franz von Dingelstedt (1814-1881) was a successful journalist and satirist, whose sympathies in his younger years were with the radical "Junges Deutschland" movement. He underwent a sort of conversion to conservatism, was embraced by the aristocratic order and held a series of prominent positions in royal theaters, culminating in his directorship of the Burgtheater in Vienna. He writes here to return the manuscript of a play ("Ein Dämon") that had been sent for consideration by Frankfurter, who wrote under the pseudonym "Ulrich Frank."
