Otto Stern (1888-1969) received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1943, the first time the award had been given since 1939. His letter announces his arrival in Berkely in a few days time. After fleeing nazi-Gemany in 1933, Stern joined the faculty of Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he remained until his retirement in 1945. Afterwards he settled in Berkeley.
