Crown 8vo, 78 (1)pp; handsomely rebound in full green deerskin by Sangorski & Sutcliffe; t.e.g. Spine and edges faded; a few small scuffs and rubbing to extremities; offsetting to the first blank from a clipping; small paper-clip impression affecting a couple of margins. First state, without punctuation marks at the ends of the first two lines of p. 52. An appealingly bound copy, with lovely oak leaf-patterned endpapers. Laid in is an autograph letter to "Irene dear- " and signed "V." for Beatrice Violet Rawson, known as Violet, Lady Leconfield of Petworth. The letter, on Petworth letterhead, presents the book to her undentified friend, specially bound with the initials "I.B." on front and rear covers. Binder's ticket in the rear from Sangorski & Sutcliffe reads: "This book is bound in Fallow Deer skin, from Petworth Park, Sussex, which has been specially tanned and dyed for The Lady Leconfield. Deerskin is a good-looking and durable leather, rarely used for bookbinding purposes since the Middle Ages. It has been prepred free from injurious acids and the natural grain preserved. The binding is carried out by Messrs. Sangorski and Sutcliffe, of No. 1, Poland Street , London, W.1."
