St. Jean-de-Luz, France: Aug. 13, 1958. Picture postcard, approx. 3-1/2 X 5-1/2 in. (8.8 X 14 cm) with fluted edges, printed in color, executed by hand on the message side, with two stamps and an airmail sticker affixed. Lightly used. Item #206326

Motherwell writes to friends from among his Provincetown circle, declaring his wish to play poker again in the winter and relating how productive he's been in France. At the time, Motherwell was newly married to artist Helen Frankenthaler and they were honeymooning in St. Jean-de-Luz, a fishing village ("...I came as close as I could to Provincetown in Europe...") near the border with Spain. It was indeed a productive time for both painters and resulted in some their most important work.
