The Doctor of Magic
Prairie City, Illinois: The Press of James Decker, 1947. First Edition. 8vo, 61pp; cloth. Spine stamping dulled; very good, without jacket. Item #206324
An unusual association copy, inscribed by the poet on the first blank leaf: "April 6, 1947, To Abbott in pleasant memory of the old days, Frank D." Loosely laid in is a postcard to the recipient, the great American journalist A.J. Liebling, signed "Leo." "Frank Deane" was the pseudonym of Leo Stone, who was a classmate of Liebling's at Dartmouth and who would go on to a distinguished career as a psychoanalyst, a discipline that thoroughly imbues his poetic depiction in this collection of the "doctor of magic."
