Der Krieg; 50 Bildtafeln nach der Radierungen. Einleitung Heinz Lüdecke.

Berlin/Leipzig: Deutsche Akademie der Künste/VEB Graphische Werkstatten, (1963). Small 4to, 88pp; stiff printed card covers. Endpapers and card covers show light foxing; some faint spotting to edges; very good in original tissue jacket. Item #206243

An East German trade edition of the suite originally published in 1921 in a limited edition of original prints. Here, the suite is augmented by the inclusion of other related sketches and preparatory versions of many prints. Dix served in the trenches through much of the First World War and his anti-war images remain among the most powerful works to emerge out of that conflict, and in anticipatory warning about the next one. This is a nice association copy, having been presented as a gift to the British-born poet and translator Christopher Middleton by the poet Günter Kunert, with a wryly mordant inscription: "Für Christopher Middleton, zur freundlichen erinnerungan an einen netten Weltkrieg, Günter Kunert, 8.3.64."

Price: $200.00
