London: Printed for E. Matthews, et al, 1722. First Edition. 8vo, [vi], 358pp with 2pp publisher's list in rear; woodcut head- and tailpieces throughout; full polished calf (19th century) rebacked; a.e.g. Small leather bookplate (Jerome Kern) on front pastedown; covers darkened at edges, leather dry and partially flaked, but still a sound and not unappealing copy. Item #206014

Rare first edition with a distinguished provenance, from the library of the great composer and bibliophile Jerome Kern, whose library was famously, and with propitious timing, sold at auction in January of 1929. Still present loosely inserted to this copy is Gucht's engraved portrait (after Taverner) of Defoe, with slight damage to the lower caption, as described in the Anderson Galleries catalogue of the Kern sale. Moore 448.
