The first three editions of Anderson's Life of Smollett were published as prefaces to collected editions of Smollett's works. Anderson continued to expand and revise his book until this edition when it first appeared independently as a separate book. This is a presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title: "Lockhart Muirhead, A.M. from his very sincere friend, The Author." Lockhart Muirhead (1765-1829) was professor of history at Glasgow University and the university librarian. He became the first keeper of the Hunterian Museum.
