With coronetted bookplates of Harriot, Duchess of St. Albans, Holly Lodge Library on each front pastedown, and resultant offsetting of facing blanks; some old pencil notations, including "Duplicate" and what were likely shelf numbers; small numbered label affixed to an upper corner of the last volume; scattered foxing; covers a bit scratched, but clean and sound. A pair of late fictions by Edgeworth, the first being an anti-anti-Semitic novel she wrote after being confronted by a Jewish-American reader who took her to task for stereotyipical depictions of Jews in her previous works. About the provenance: Harriot Mellon Coutts Beauclerk, Duchess of St. Albans was a celebrity of her time, often the target of caricaturists and satirists. A popular actress of humble origins, she married into two fortunes, the second time into nobility.
