An advance copy with the publisher's "Compliments of" slip laid in. The slip has been inscribed and signed by Copland: "For Sylvia Marlowe, love from Aaron, 1952." The recipient was a prominent modern harpsichordist, whose repertoire spanned from Bach to Boogie Woogie to the modern compositions of Elliott Carter and Alan Hovhaness, among others. Copland was a frequent guest at parties Marlowe hosted in New York.
