One of Prokosch's rare "butterfly books" that he printed himself on a handpress. This is copy number III out of a total edition of forty-four copies, the Roman-numeraled copies being bound in Neapolitan paper. With a warm inscription on the title page: "For Josephine with my devoted regards, Frederic, Rome: Christmas,1951". Josephine Crane, the recipient, was a New York socialite and prominent patron of the arts - a co-founder of the Museum of Modern Art who hosted a regular literary salon at her Fifth Avenue apartment for many years.
