A contemporary, and romantic rival, of Dostoevsky Rozanov was a controversial and eclectic writer who wrestled with Christian theology and his own liberal attitudes toward human sexuality. His work was suppressed by Soviet censors and he starved to death in the immediate aftermath of the 1919 revolution.
