Let Freedom Ring

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1928. First edition. 8vo, 341pp; blue cloth, stamped in gilt. Bookplate; ownership inscription and marginalia; fine in a lightly toned dust jacket, worn at spine ends and tips, but still very bright and crisp. Item #205219

Major work by Hays, a prominent civil liberties attorney. An associate of Clarence Darrow (co-dedicatee of this book), Hays was involved in some of the major civil liberties cases of the era, including the Scopes trial, Sacco and Vanzetti, and the Scottsboro Boys. This is an excellent association copy, from the library of W. Brooke Graves, a political scientist and longtime professor at Temple University who wrote numerous books on constitutional government. His 1936 book American State Government is classic in the field. Laid in are two pieces of printed promotional material about this publication from the American Civil Liberties Union, of which Hays was a founder.
