The Inferno; Translated from the 100th French Edition with an Introduction by Edward J. O'Brien.

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1918. First American edition. 8vo, 251pp; red cloth. Tips bumped, otherwise a brilliant, bright copy in a rubbed dust jacket, spine faded shade, and with wear to the extremities, a small chip at the top of the spine, and lengthy closed tear extending from the crown down along the rear hinge and onto the rear panel. One old tape mend on the underside. Item #205001

The first, and significantly expurgated, translation of Barbusse's novel of voyeurism. An unexpurgated edition in Engish did not appear until 1966. Barbusse won great acclaim and received the Prix Goncourt for his WWI novel Le Feu (Under Fire). Despite the described issues with the dust jacket, this is an exceptionally nice copy of book not often found in jacket.
