Replenishing Jessica

New York: Boni and Liveright, (1925). First edition. 8vo, 272pp; orange cloth with printed spine label. Abrasion to front flyleaf where some tape seems to have once gotten stuck; neat ink name on rear pastedown; spatter mark to top edge, some light marking to cloth, in the rare dust jacket, designed by Hans Flato, with a couple of small tears, a narrow triangular chip to the base of the front panel and small pinhole to the spine affecting the author's name. Item #204997

Though rather tame by today's standards, Bodenheim's novel about a sexually promiscuous young woman was a scandal at the time of publication, bringing obscenity charges against his publisher Horace Liveright in a much publicized case. When a New York grand jury first presented charges, Liveright withdrew the book, though he continued to fight the case. It would take three years until his eventual acquittal and the reintroduction of the book to the market. Not frequently encountered in dust jacket.
