Discreet booklabel affixed to corner of the front pastedown; gilt stamping slightly dulled, a bit of toning to endpapers and jacket flaps, close to fine in spine faded jacket with a few scratches, some tape-mends on the underside, and a pair of short closed tears. Presentation cop, inscribed by Thomson at the time of publication: "For Josephine Crane, long time a friend, Virgil, New York, April 1945." The recipient was a prominent New York socialite and philanthropist, co-founder of the Museum of Modern Art and a sponsor of Thomson and Gertrude Stein's opera "Four Saint in Three Acts". Mrs. Crane held a literary and artistic "salon" at her Fifth Avenue apartment over a period of many years, where Thomson was a regular guest.
