Los Angeles: Greater Los Angeles Urban League, 1968. Broadside poster, on single leaf approx. 8-1/2 X 11 inches, printed on one side. Three punched holes at left margin for ring binding, otherwise just about fine. Item #204601
Original graphic flyer advertising the event sponsored by the Urban League and held at the Hollywood Palladium, August 25, 1968. The event was conceived to honor people making a difference in their local communities, and featured performances (not announced on the poster) by the blue-eyed soul group The Rascals, whose song "People Got to be Free" was a hit that summer, as well as Della Reese and the Clara Ward Singers. It was taped for broadcast on local television the following night. An idealistic effort in a troubled time, the awards ceremony was overshadowed by darker events: the police killings of three Black Panther Party members at a gas station in LA and the start of police-instigated rioting at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, both of which occurred on the same night.
