The first edition of Milosz's classic study of intellectual life under totalitarianism. The book marked with a bright line Milosz's break with the Stalinist Polish regime, which he had served as a cultural attache before going into exile at this time. It stands as one of the greatest works of cultural criticism of the twentieth century. Milosz was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1980.
