The major theoretical work by Appia, the great Swiss innovator of stage design and lighting, translated from the French but published in German. Appia is best known for his work with the operas of Richard Wagner. He was a visionary designer who embraced the emergence of electric lighting to produce influential stagings famous for their contrast between light and shadow. This is a significant association copy, inscribed and signed by Appia on the half title page for the French theatrical director Albert Carré. Includes a splendid series of collotype plates depicting Appia's atmospheric stage sets.
