Item #204186 Nones. W. H. Auden.

Nones

New York: Random House, (1951). First edition. 8vo, 81pp; cloth. Spine dulled, some finger smudges to endpapers, very good in supplied jacket, suitably smudged and with slight discoloration to the spine. Item #204186

One of 4000 copies in the first printing (Bloomfield & Mendelson A32a).This is an affectionate presentation copy, inscribed by Auden to the writer and translator William Weaver: "Bill Weaver with love from Wystan, June 1951" and with small corrections by Auden to the text on two pages. The greatest translator of Italian literature, Weaver lived in Italy for decades. At the time of this inscription, he was part of the international circle around Marguerite Caetani, publisher of the journal Botteghe Oscure; Auden, also in that crowd, had a house on the island of Ischia. While not especially uncommon, this book is seldom encountered with an Auden inscription.
