Melanie Kurt (1880-1941) was a versatile operatic soprano. She joined the Metropolitan Opera in 1914, specializing in Wagner, but his works were banned when the United States joined the war against Germany in 1917. She returned to Europe after the war and remained in Vienna until, being Jewish, she was forced to emigrate in 1938 after the nazi takeover.
