New York: 1963. Buckram. 11 X 14 inch white paper sketchbook bound in black buckram. Very Good. Item #202134
Artist's sketchbook filled on 117 pages with original ink drawings and watercolors. Affixed to the front endpaper is an original poster for the film "Shoot the Moon," a collaboration by the artist's then husband Red Grooms and Rudy Burckhardt; other collage and manuscript elements on the front and rear endpapers. The book is filled throughout with individual and group portraits drawn from life by Gross, as well as two drawings by her father, the artist Chaim Gross as well as another by Sabina Teichman and Susan Lawson. For the most part, however, it is the vision of Mimi Gross that fills this book with evocative images of friends, fellow artists, collectors, teachers, and others. On the last blank leaf she has written a full-page "Short History of this Book" for the collector to whom she presented it as a gift. Her account recalls her acquisition of the book, its loss and recovery, the exchange of art and money, the circumstances of several of the drawings and identity of the other artists, the premiere of "Shoot the Moon," etc., signed and dated.
