Distraught over the death of his fifteen year old daughter, Smollett set out with his wife to travel through Europe. His memoir here is in "the form of letters to imaginary correspondents and gives a remarkable picture of mid 18th-century life on the Continent" (Cambridge Guide to Literature in English). It was on this trip that Smollett encountered Laurence Sterne, whose Sentimental Journey depicts the Scotsman as "Smelfungus."
