Kammerer's controversial work, offering proof of Lamarck's notion that acquired physical characteristics could be genetically inherited, won the Austrian biologist instant fame as the 'new Darwin.' When confronted with evidence that he had faked his results to arrive at the desired data, Kammerer committed suicide in 1926.
