Sweepings

New York: Boni & Liveright, 1926. First edition. 8vo, 447pp; textured black cloth stamped in gilt. Spine stamping slightly dull, otherwise an exceptional copy in a price clipped dust jacket with just a bit of wear to spine ends and corners, small snag to spine at front hinge. Item #205479

The author's first book, an epic novel tracing the rise and fall of a Chicago department store dynasty, Sweepings was adapted into two Hollywood films. Cohen himself was also a successful screenwriter, most notably of the 1939 adaptation of Somerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage. He served on the committee led by Theodore Dreiser that travelled to Kentucky to report on the situation for Harlan County coal miners and contributed an essay to the report. Sweepings was his most successful novel and quickly went into multiple printings. The first edition is exceptionally uncommon in dust jacket.
